AWỌN AKỌLE
Toronto in the past decade has and continues to see a lot of construction and growth. Awọn Akọle - Temple of the Dawn Trader is an ode to the working class, to those who toil at the break of dawn and whose labor builds and shapes the city, chiefly the carpentry trades (wood), masonry trades (brick, concrete ,stone) and steel workers (steel). Constructed out of galvanized steel scaffolding and wrapped in a vibrant dawn palette of scaffold shrink wrap to fabricate a volume, the pavilion beckons visitors to approach and pay homage by way of “offerings” to the patron saints – Holz, Stahl, & Ton- of the three chief trades and in so doing help to identify which materials they would like to more present in the built environment – wood, steel , masonry - as the city continues to grow into the future.
This was an entry for the 2025 Toronto Winter Stations, the theme of the competition was Dawn.
